Mobile Apps, because web sites are so 1996

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

My other title for this blog post was going to be “Mobile Applications – the new frontier”.   The reason being, everyone wants a mobile app now.   No matter what they make, sell or do they want to figure out some way of bringing their business to you in the form of an mobile app and more often than not a iPhone app.

It’s an exciting time now for everyone involved, whether it’s to companies or consultants trying to figure out how the company will be best served by an iPhone app or the customers wading through all the different apps out there to see what peaks their interest.  This is the time when companies and customers are still trying to figure out what exactly they want.  Web sites are all getting fairly standardized with the only real options being a brochure-ware site, an  e-commerce site, some form of social media or a service provider.   Mobile apps haven’t found their niches yet.  We’re still trying to figure out how people really want to use their mobile apps and so are the people.

One of the most important rules to remember when creating a mobile app is: get in, get it done, get out.  Mobile apps are a majority of the time something that people are going to use spur of the moment, want to accomplish one or two simple tasks and at any time they will just up and leave you.  Don’t expect to keep a long complex interaction going with the user.  Your relationship with your user is fickle, they’re using you…to fill a void in a short period of time most likely and as soon as something more interesting comes along…you’re history.

I’m sure we’ll cover all of this in more detail later on, but the great thing is,  this is all new and it’s a great time to be involved with mobile applications.
