Get Your Android SDK’s Ready

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

It seemed that all the buzz earlier today was about Android phones outselling iPhones. Sure Apple fanboys were discrediting the articles saying that it is a combination of all Android devices against the lone iPhone. They have a point, but I wouldn’t go and overlook Google’s mobile platform. Android seems to be taking off like wildfire, and with Apple making their opinion of Adobe’s Flash and Air development for the iPhone, you have a whole bunch of developers turning to Android.

I guess what I’m trying to say is you better start looking at Andriod. Its not going anywhere but up.

Flash and the iPhone

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Today the huge news online and all the buzz on Twitter was Flash on the iPhone. Let me just clarify for those of you that were sucked into the headlines like I was. I think a lot of people totally missed the facts. Flash is NOT I repeat NOT coming to the iPhone. At least the Flash that most people are thinking of.

The Flash that many many people know,  won’t be available on the iPhone. Actually, Adobe announced this morning that the iPhone is pretty much the only smart phone on the market that won’t be getting Flash Player 10.

Flash player for those that don’t know is a plugin that allows a browser to view Flash movies, interactive Flash sites and all those online games you play when you should be working. This is not what is coming to the iPhone. You still won’t be able to pick up your iPhone, launch Safari and access these types of sites.

So what will the iPhone be getting? After all thats all you read about online today right?

So this is what’s really happening. Using Flash CS5, available next spring, developers will be able to code games and other apps using ActionScript 3 in Flash and export their project into a native application for the iPhone.

This is what Adobe officially had to say…

“Flash Professional CS5 will enable you to build applications for iPhone and iPod touch using ActionScript 3. These applications can be delivered to iPhone and iPod touch users through the Apple App Store.”*

This is definitely pretty cool. There are a bunch of Flash developers that probably shed a few tears of joy today. This announcement gives a lot of people that have been waiting the ability to deliver awesome content to App Store.

Look forward to a bunch of Flash apps running natively on the iPhone next spring and make sure to check out Adobe’s video demonstration here.

30 Ugliest iPhone Apps

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

You’ve probably all seen the 30 iPhone apps with sexy interfaces article that has circled the web lately. Yes, there are some awesome apps out there that use good design and are fun to look at while you use them. What i’ve wondered lately is why I haven’t seen a 30 ugliest iPhone apps feature. If you’ve spent any time in the App Store you know how easy this would be to do.

Instead of making a list of the worst looking apps out there, I’ll just give you some advice to help you and your app stay off of that list when it’s made. Are you ready for it? Its pretty deep…Let designers do design.

I think that too many apps are pushed through the idea and development stages without much thought about the user interface and how the app should look. These things are vitally important to the success of your app and shouldn’t be pushed aside. I’ve seen a ton of apps that are functional and useful but still don’t look good. Yes, there are a few worthless apps that are selling just because of their shiny logo and sleek interface. But if you want to take your app to the next level and really have a great product, don’t overlook the design. As we’ve all learned from watching too much HGTV, curb appeal really does matter.
