Flash and the iPhone

Monday, October 5th, 2009

Today the huge news online and all the buzz on Twitter was Flash on the iPhone. Let me just clarify for those of you that were sucked into the headlines like I was. I think a lot of people totally missed the facts. Flash is NOT I repeat NOT coming to the iPhone. At least the Flash that most people are thinking of.

The Flash that many many people know,  won’t be available on the iPhone. Actually, Adobe announced this morning that the iPhone is pretty much the only smart phone on the market that won’t be getting Flash Player 10.

Flash player for those that don’t know is a plugin that allows a browser to view Flash movies, interactive Flash sites and all those online games you play when you should be working. This is not what is coming to the iPhone. You still won’t be able to pick up your iPhone, launch Safari and access these types of sites.

So what will the iPhone be getting? After all thats all you read about online today right?

So this is what’s really happening. Using Flash CS5, available next spring, developers will be able to code games and other apps using ActionScript 3 in Flash and export their project into a native application for the iPhone.

This is what Adobe officially had to say…

“Flash Professional CS5 will enable you to build applications for iPhone and iPod touch using ActionScript 3. These applications can be delivered to iPhone and iPod touch users through the Apple App Store.”*

This is definitely pretty cool. There are a bunch of Flash developers that probably shed a few tears of joy today. This announcement gives a lot of people that have been waiting the ability to deliver awesome content to App Store.

Look forward to a bunch of Flash apps running natively on the iPhone next spring and make sure to check out Adobe’s video demonstration here.
